: Did White People Bring Christianity to Africa? No – Here Is The True History*
Many people believe that Christianity was brought to Africa by Europeans during colonialism. This is not correct.
The truth is, Christianity has been in Africa since the 1st century, at the same time as Europe. In fact, Africa had Christianity before many European countries like Britain, Germany, and France.
HERE IS THE DETAILED HISTORY:
1. EGYPT
Christianity came to Egypt around 42 AD. It was brought by Saint Mark the Evangelist, who wrote the Gospel of Mark in the Bible. He started the church in Alexandria. Alexandria became one of the most powerful Christian cities in the world. It had one of the first Christian schools where people came to learn the Bible.
2. ETHIOPIA & ERITREA (The Kingdom of Aksum)
Ethiopia has two important histories:
First, in the Bible in Acts 8:26-39, an Ethiopian government official was baptized by Philip the Evangelist around 34 AD. He returned to Ethiopia with the Christian faith.
Second, in 330 AD, King Ezana of the Kingdom of Aksum made Christianity the official religion of the kingdom. Ethiopia was the second country in the whole world to officially accept Christianity as a state religion, after Armenia.
3. LIBYA
Libya had a famous city called Cyrene. Simon of Cyrene, the man who helped Jesus carry the cross, was from Libya. On the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, many people from Cyrene were there and became Christians (Acts 2:10). They went back to Libya with the faith around 33 AD.
4. TUNISIA, ALGERIA & MOROCCO
This whole area was called Carthage in the olden days. Christianity spread there in the 1st and 2nd century through traders and travelers. This region produced great Christian leaders. For example, Saint Augustine, one of the greatest Christian writers in history, was from Algeria. Tertullian, another great church father, was from Tunisia.
5. SUDAN (Kingdom of Nubia)
The Kingdom of Nubia in Sudan became Christian around 543 AD. They had three great Christian kingdoms called Nobatia, Makuria, and Alodia. They were Christian for almost 1,000 years and built many churches.
IN CONCLUSION:
Christianity did NOT come to Africa from Europe. It came directly from Jerusalem to Africa.
Africa had churches, Bible schools, bishops, and held important church meetings hundreds of years before Christianity reached many parts of Europe.
The first African Christians were taught by the Apostles of Jesus themselves, not by colonial masters.
